University : Graduate School of Systems of Life Sciences, Kyushu University

I am in five years PhD program from October 2012 - October 2017 in the field of cognitive neuroscience.
I have earned the master’s degree on September 2014
- Volunteer activities,
Vice President of African Society of Kyushu University from April 2014 - 2015
Culture officer at Kyushu University International Student Association April 2014 - 2015

YSF took an important part of my educational endeavors. I deeply appreciate the support that I had from the foundation during my studies. I have the honor to be one of your scholars.

It’s a pleasure for me to share my experience and impression during my staying in Japan. But first, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Yoshida Scholarship Foundation for choosing me as one of their scholars. They took an important part of my educational endeavors. I deeply appreciate the support that I had from the foundation during my studies. With their assistant and encouragement I could obtain the master’s degree. I do really appreciate their generosity and very grateful for their support.

I am Noha Zommara, an Egyptian girl. My home town is Alexandria. Alexandria is a beautiful costal city with lots of palm trees. I left my hometown in Egypt, and made the decision to continue toward higher studies. I consider this a very important step in my life. I graduated from the Psychology department of Alexandria University, Egypt. Psychology is the study of human behavior and its cognitive function, how we react or perceive; however, I wanted to learn about how the cognitive functions relate to the brain, how we can encode and decode neural signals. So I decided to continue my studies in the felid of cognitive neuroscience at Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences, at Kyushu University. One of the reasons that I chose Japan to continue my studies is that because I used to live in Japan while I was a child. I was raised in Japan; I went to Japanese kindergarten and Japanese elementary school. The time when I got accepted in Kyushu University I was very happy and I had lots of hopes and wishes to achieve during my study period; one of which is to get a good research experience.

I am interested in the decision making related topics. Every day in our life we have to make decisions from simple ones to deeper levels. We choose an action over other alternatives aiming to come up with the most beneficial outcomes. I think such topic is interesting; many researches are trying to know the neural representations in our brain during the cognitive processes. So, I decided to study the deliberation of decision making. In my research I am using rats as models to investigate how environment can affect the decision making. Of course during my studies I faced some difficulties in the beginning, but I had support from my professor and my lab mates and every time they kept telling me step by step. I think laboratory environment and the advanced equipment are impressive in Japan.

International conference of the Society of Neuroscience 2013 at San Diego, USA

My first attempt to build a snowwoman not a snowman, Beppu-Oita, 2014

The most memorable thing happened to me during my master’s studies, when my professor asked me to participate in a conference at the Unites States of America. That was my first time to take part in an international conference. It was very good experience full of adventures. I really enjoyed studying and getting new experience in my research field. Currently, I am a PhD student in the same department. In my PhD studies I am using electroencephalography (EEG) to measure the brain activity on human. I would like to investigate more about the underling neural mechanism in the human brain.

Of course, life is not just about studying; and since I am in a beautiful country like Japan I wanted to devote some of my time to explore and enjoy my staying. Japan unlike Egypt has many mountains and more green areas, I feel peace and relax. I like to climb mountains, go hiking, explore new places and visit some historical places as well; as we say old is gold! On a more personal level; I acquired new skills and I become more open-minded. I can say I am on a journey to rediscover myself. Also, I have to mention that I really enjoyed the study tours YKK has organized. I met many nice people from YKK stuff and I made many good friends from many different countries and from different universities. When I went to YKK manufacture I was amazed by what I saw there. As you might know YKK is the world's largest zipper manufacture and environmentally friendly. It’s really impressive and very professional. One day I would like to visit YKK in Egypt!

One last word I would like to say; thank you YKK for supporting me during my studies, I do really appreciate your help and being always by my side encouraging me. I have the honor to be one of your scholars.

I did it! I reached the top of Aburayama
